The Treaty of Itaipu, signed on April 26, 1973, which formalized the implementation of a binational hydroelectric plant between Brazil and Paraguay on the Paraná River, is valid for 50 years, ending in 2023. The main hydroelectric plant in Latin America, constitutes a key element in regional geopolitics. The Itaipu Dam provided, in 2021, 8.4% of the energy consumed in Brazil and 85.6% of the energy consumed in Paraguay. In 2023, the two countries will renegotiate the Annex “C” of the treaty, establishing new rules for the price of energy that Paraguay supplies to Brazil, an issue that already configures one of the main themes of Brazilian diplomacy. In this sense, due the strategic importance of the hydroelectric plant in the generation of energy for the two countries and for the process of regional integration this article will analyze from the perspective of Geography and Communication, the geopolitics of energy on the Brazil-Paraguay border and its consequences.
